My baby was born on March 7 at noon. For months, I imagined what she would look like. Would she have my eyes or her dad’s? My curly hair or my husband’s straight hair? One thing I knew for sure was that I wanted to preserve those first precious moments. Babies grow so quickly, and I didn’t want those memories to fade with time.

I knew I didn’t want a traditional studio session. I wanted photographs that would tell our story and capture what life felt like during those first days as a family.

We had moved into our home about a year before our baby was born, so I had put a lot of love and effort into making it feel like us. I painted our main bedroom because I didn’t want a simple, solid-colored wall. I wanted warmth and texture, so I researched a technique called limewash.

I’m not going to lie—painting that room took an entire day! First, I had to cover the original gray-blue wall with white paint. Then, using a large brush and a combination of white and beige, I painted X-shaped strokes to create that soft, textured finish.

I’ve always loved natural materials such as rattan, woven details, and jute, so I chose nightstands that complemented that style. Those textures have become a recurring element in my photography, too. I’m drawn to the warmth, simplicity, and timeless feeling they bring to an image.

When it came time to plan our family photographs, I wanted all of those details to be part of the story. I wanted to remember not only how our baby looked but also the home we had created and the feeling of becoming a family of three.

I also wanted our photographs to feel timeless. I avoided trendy patterns and colors when choosing our outfits because I wanted to love these images just as much 10 years from now as I do today. I chose a white dress for myself, a beige woven onesie for our baby, and khaki pants with a beige shirt for my husband. I wanted everything to feel natural, simple, and cohesive without distracting from what mattered most: our family.

The session wasn’t easy. Running back and forth behind a tripod while wearing a dress, trying to direct my husband in a second language, and soothing a newborn at the same time was quite an experience! But despite the challenges, I love the result because the photographs feel like us.

I wasn’t looking for perfect, unrealistic pictures. I wanted natural images with less posing and more focus on the love and emotions of the moment. I approached many of the frames as if I were telling a story through a film, thinking about how each image would contribute to the bigger picture.

Taking these photographs was one of the most meaningful experiences for me. I’ll always remember how tiny she was in our arms, her little hands, her soft hair, and all the love surrounding those first days together.

The best part? I created an album with all of these images so we can sit together, turn the pages, and revisit this chapter of our lives for years to come. 🤍

This experience is one of the reasons I love in-home newborn photography. Your home holds so many meaningful details, from the nursery you carefully prepared to the little corners where you spend your days with your baby. These elements help tell your family’s unique story.
